From Sunlight to Vineyards: Renewable Energy Support for Agricultural Production

Access to water is one of the most critical needs for farmers, particularly in regions affected by drought and rising production costs. Through the OLIVE Project, the Development Foundation of Türkiye (DFT) provides solar panel support, enabling farmers to meet the energy needs of agricultural irrigation through renewable sources and helping them sustain their production.

For one of the project beneficiaries engaged in grape production, regular irrigation of the vineyard is essential to maintaining production. With the solar panels provided through DFT’s grant support, the farmer can now use solar energy to meet the energy needs of irrigation. The farmer describes the contribution of this support to vineyard production:

“Thanks to the solar panels provided through DFT’s grant support, I am able to meet the water needs of my vineyard. Irrigation is one of the most important requirements for the continuity of our production. Using solar energy not only makes the irrigation process easier but also helps us sustain production in our vineyard.”

Solar Energy Powers Agricultural Production

Agricultural irrigation depends not only on access to water but also on access to the energy required to deliver that water to fields and vineyards. The energy generated by the solar panels helps the farmer manage irrigation more regularly and sustainably.

The farmer describes the difference solar energy has made in the day-to-day production process:

“Without water, it is very difficult to continue production in the vineyard. Now, with the energy we generate from the sun, we can bring water to our vineyard. For us, this is more than just energy support; it means being able to continue producing.”

Using solar energy also helps the farmer make more efficient use of available resources. Meeting irrigation energy needs through a renewable source offers a long-term and sustainable solution for agricultural production.

“Sunlight is a resource we already have here. Now we can use it for our production. Being able to irrigate with the energy provided by the solar panels allows us to make better use of the resources available to us.”

“We Want to Protect Our Vineyard and Continue Producing”

For the farmer, the vineyard is not simply an area of agricultural production; it is also an important part of the family’s livelihood. Access to solutions that help sustain production is therefore important not only for meeting immediate needs but also for planning for the future.

“What matters to us is protecting our vineyard and continuing to produce. As long as we have access to irrigation, we can take care of our vineyard and continue working to see the results of our efforts. The most important aspect of this support is that it gives us the opportunity to keep producing.”

Through the OLIVE Project, DFT provides grant support tailored to the needs farmers encounter in their production processes in Mardin, Batman and Diyarbakır. Solar panels are one of these forms of support, enabling farmers to meet the energy needs of agricultural irrigation through renewable energy sources.

By developing solutions that directly respond to farmers’ needs, DFT continues to contribute to sustaining local agricultural production, promoting the more efficient use of available resources, and strengthening rural livelihoods through the OLIVE Project.

“As long as we can continue producing, we can look to the future with greater hope. We want the work and effort we have invested in our vineyard to continue. This support has given us an important opportunity to sustain our production.”

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for their valuable contributions to the implementation of activities carried out under the OLIVE Project.
